And, if it means anything, I’ve become quite a big fan. Jura 16 recently won Gold Best in Class at the 2010 International Wine and Spirits Competition. It’s a fascinating book and a must have for the true whisky lover. Despite there not being much on the little island, these guys know how to make some quality whisky. About his journey and distillery visits he wrote a book called ‘The Whisky Distilleries of the United Kingdom’, describing in great detail and wonderful style the distilleries of that era. The distillery finally reopened in 1963 providing jobs for a quarter of the male workforce on the island. The new distillery was built on the same location using some of the old ruined buildings. Somewhere around 1950 a few people on Jura got together and decided to restart the distillery, creating jobs for the island. In the early 1900’s the distillery was dismantled and the buildings became a ruin. The distillery was rebuilt in 1884 and produced 64,000 gallons per year back then. The whisky produced then was peaty from character, which differs considerably from the whisky produced today. Ever since the Jura Distillery prospers and reached recognition on an international base.The Campbell’s from Jura built the distillery around 1810. ![]() In the beginning of the 20th century, the old distillery went bankrupt and the buildings were decaying until Fletcher and Riley-Smith decided to revive the business, which is so rich of tradition. The distillery itself was established in 1810 but the facilities, as they are in operation today, were built in the 1960s by Robin Fletcher and Tony Riley-Smith. It can be traced back to the early 17th century. Amber gold in colour with aromas of vanilla spice, citrus and a hint of sea spray, followed by cinnamon, pears, pecans and toffee fudge in the aftertaste. The Jura Distillery is a small company on an island that has a long history in whisky production. A refined balance of rich fruit and gentle smoky notes. This wood is rather non-typical in the whisky production but turns out to be the right choice in this case. It matured in casks that are made of Limousin oak, which comes from an oak producing region in France. This single malt scotch that in spite of its young age, it tastes more like a well-aged dram. The Isle of Jura Prophecy is non-chill filtered, what led to a stronger peaty aroma. The Isle of Jura Superstition is a very interesting dram indeed, being made up of 13 heavily peated malt with the remainder being made up of 13 year old and 21 year old whiskies. A bit caramel and vanilla join the flavour union with some delay. The finish is lasting long and reveals dry notes of smoke and herbals. The power of 46 % alcohol by volume is obvious and makes this island whisky to the strongest of the Jura product range so far. It shows a mellow acerbity and flavours of nutmeg, fresh sea spray, citrus fruits, cinnamon as well as cardamom. Notes of aniseed, very little fruits, a light sweetness and a maritime odour of salty sea weed accompany the peat. Its smoky aroma is already quite strong on the nose. Even though its products are usually unpeated or just very little peated, this Isle of Jura Prophecy is comparable with the smokier whiskies from the Isle of Islay. The Jura Distillery is the only whisky producing company on the little Isle of Jura. This prophecy stated that the last of the Campbells would leave the island with one eye and all his worldly possessions in a single cart, pulled by a white horse. This whisky is named for an island prophecy, predicting the downfall of the Campbell clan, who ruled over the island for many generations. Aromas of floral heather, brazil nuts and salty sea air fill the nose, and the palate offers notes of smoky bacon, maple syrup, liquorice and dried fruit.
